What is an espagnolette lock?

An espagnolette is a multipoint lock that secures a window or door sash with a single turn of the handle, or the key on a locking handle. The name comes from the French word for “Spanish”, after the long bolt the design is based on.

The handle turns a central espagnolette gearbox, which drives a metal rod along the sash. The rod throws hooks or shootbolts into metal keeps on the frame, so the mechanism locks the sash at both ends at once. Unlike a single latch, it gives robust locking with minimal effort, which is why they are commonly used in uPVC and casement windows.

Locking at several points also pulls the sash tight to the frame. This improves weather sealing, cuts draughts and moisture leaks, and boosts energy efficiency, while the lock stays simple to open from inside in an emergency.

What are the best espagnolette door locks?

The best espagnolette door locks combine multiple locking points with a robust gearbox and a quality handle. Multipoint security makes forced entry much harder than a single-point lock does, and doors fitted with espagnolette bolts can help meet insurers’ security requirements.

For brands, Reliance and Maco are trusted trade names. Read more about our Reliance range, browse our Maco and U-rail bolts, or read through our door locks and security category for external hardware.

How to choose the right espagnolette door locking system

Espagnolette locks vary, so rather than leaving it to guesswork, identify what you have before you replace a lock for your customer.

System type

Reliance W1 systems suit flush casements, while W2 differs by using a tongue-style espagnolette. Maco and U-rail bolts suit U-rail sashes.

Length, backset, and handing

Standard door espagnolette lengths are 1800mm and 2000mm. Window lengths vary with sash height, and a faceplate extension adds length plus an extra locking point. 25mm is a common backset across our Reliance range, and espagnolette locks can be right- or left-handed.

Handles and accessories

Many espagnolette systems are compatible with various handle systems, from Connoisseur and Virage offset locking handles to decorative From The Anvil designs. For locking handles, check the key series if you need one key to work across a project. Optional nightvent keeps and shootbolts let you replace individual parts.

Finally, match the faceplate width, material, and fixing holes to the old unit. If you’re unsure, contact our team with your measurements.
