Not every door needs the same level of security. The right choice comes down to where the door sits in the property, how it’s used day to day, and what your customer’s home insurance policy requires.

Choosing by door type

Internal doors carry a low security risk, so a basic spring-loaded or tubular latch is usually enough to hold the door closed without needing a key. External doors are a different job entirely – wooden front doors commonly suit mortice deadlocks, sashlocks, or rim locks, while uPVC doors often need a multipoint locking system rated against forced entry.

Choosing by room

Room use matters as much as door type. Deadbolt latches enhance security and privacy for bathroom doors, giving occupants a quick, key-free way to lock themselves in without compromising on safety.

Security ratings & insurance compliance

British Standard BS3621 is often required by UK home insurance providers for final exit doors, so it’s worth checking this rating before specifying a lock for a front or back door. A BSI Kitemark gives further assurance that a cylinder lock has been tested for resistance against snapping, picking, and drilling.

One point worth flagging on commercial and rented properties: locks that require a key to exit should be avoided on fire escape doors, as they risk trapping occupants in an emergency.

Tubular latches

A tubular latch is commonly used for internal doors, fitted through a bored hole in the door face rather than a cut mortice pocket. Because tubular latches require a mortice cut for the striking plate rather than the whole latch body, they’re generally quicker and cheaper to install than a full mortice lock.

Mortice latches & locks

Mortice locks are suitable for front doors and external entrances, sitting fully within the door itself for a stronger, more tamper-resistant fixing. Deadbolt latches with a BS3621 rating add a further layer of enhanced security here, and are the type most UK insurers expect to see on a final exit door.

Rim locks & night latches

Night latches – also known as Yale locks – are surface mounted on the interior face of the door rather than set into it, making them a popular retrofit option. They should only ever be used as supplementary security alongside a mortice deadlock, never as the sole lock on an external door.
