Does your dust extractor meet health and safety requirements?

Wood dust can cause serious health problems, for example asthma . The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 require that you protect workers. Wood dust can also cause cancer.

Both hardwood and softwood dusts have a Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) of 5mg/m3 which must not be exceeded. These limits are measured as an average over an 8 hour period . But you must reduce exposure to wood dust to as low as ‘responsibility practical’

Class M classification dust extractor health and safety

Health and safety laws require that a workshop has dust extraction at woodworking machines, also known as local exhaust ventilation or LEV.

Never sweep up or use compressed air lines as this will disturb the dust and allow it to become inhaled. Always clean up using a suitable industrial vacuum cleaner that meets the Class M classification.
