Sash Window Parts Explained

Testament to their sound design, this type of sliding window has been in use for hundreds of years and is often still specified on historic building refurbishments or on new builds.

A key benefit is that when opened, there is no wasted space of the window hanging outside or inside as there is with hinged types.

More complex than they first appear, we offer a variety of sash window parts, some better known than others, as explained below.

Sash Weights

Often made from lead but also obtainable in mild steel, these weights are used with sash cords and form the hidden counter balance so that lifting the lower sash is made easy and it will stay in place.

Sash Axle Pulleys

These work with the cords and weights within the window frame or architrave to smooth the motion of the cords when opening or closing.

Catches Or Fasteners

From Brighton style to a quadrant, Fitch, or claw clasp catches, these are the hardware that holds the sash window closed. Often made in an attractive polished brass finish that looks superb.

Lifts

A sash lift is a small fixed component handle on the top of the lower sash or jamb by which you lift it open to let in fresh air.

Sash Stops

In some circumstances you may wish to make sure the sash frame cannot go to far up and for this we have a variety of stops in classy brass, bronze, pewter or chrome; we also stock the Weekes type.

Sash Seals And Parting Beads

You want your windows to open and close smoothly and keep out the bad weather and for this we have a range of sash window seals, brush seals and parting beads from brands like Flipex and Partex.

The parting bead component is a seal between upper and lower sashes so that they have a channel to slide past each other with ease.
